Pleased with my progress…

Notice the 3 main body parts: the prosoma (the front horseshoe shape), the opisthosoma (middle), and the telson (tail). People mistake the telson for a weapon, but it is actually used as a rudder for steering, and to help right itself if it gets flipped over. NEVER, never, never pick up a live horeseshoe crab by its telson.

I am featuring my pages related to places on the website until spring break, but I was working on my horseshoe crab page today and was so pleased with how it is shaping up that I wanted to share it. Have a look and tell me what you think? Is there anything you would like to see added? Or is it too much?

The new “Featured Page”

Baynard Mausoleum

Baynard Mausoleum

I am pleased to add a new feature to the website, called appropriately enough, the “Featured Page.” I am hard at work building those photo and information filled pages you can find in the drop down menus above. Each week I will feature a different page, and with Spring Break not (too) far away, I am going to feature “Places to Go” to maybe give you some inspiration for your next visit to the island. This week’s Featured Page, found at the top of the left sidebar, is the Baynard Mausoleum. Enjoy and happy planning for your next visit.

Thinking about y’all…

It’s actually kind of pretty if you don’t have to venture out in it.

We are having another snow day here in southwest Ohio. That makes the boy happy but leaves me truly missing the island and looking forward to spring break. But I’m not going to waste this day- I am hard at work on the site and this week (today hopefully) you will see the introduction of a weekly featured page. The pages can be found in the drop down menus at the top and detail all the things that make Hilton Head Island so perfect. Until then, happy snow day!!

Cooking with Fresh Clams #3

Low Country Boil Clam Chowder

With all the rain we had the first half of last week, I was really in the mood for something warm and comforting. I still had better than three dozen clams that I needed to use so my mind wandered to chowder. But here in the lowcountry, a New England or Manhattan style chowder just didn’t seem right. One of my favorite lowcountry dishes is the lowcountry boil, or Frogmore Stew, so I thought I’d borrow these flavors for a chowder. Continue reading

If you have been on the island this week, or following the news on island happenings, you are well aware that we have been experiencing “King Tides” this week. Tuesday’s high tide was the third highest recorded since 1935, when the National Weather Service began collecting this information. So what exactly is a King Tide?Put simply, a King Tide is just an exceptionally High (and low) tide. These tides occur a just a few times a year, but to understand why, I think it is easiest to start with a brief explanation of how the tides occur. Continue reading
